Analysis Of Double Page Spread - NME

The main image is of a woman and the two men on the outside of her. This tells us that she is protected by these two men and so weaker than them. This portrays the stereotypical image of a woman in rock or indie. The background is a greyish fading away colour with a silhoette kind of effect. This shows us a more mysterious side to the main image. Also if you see what they are wearing they are wearing all black and nothing else. This appeals to their targeted audience and makes them look interesting to read about.
Also by having the female placed there they are able to attract a larger audience both female and male. However, the women looks quite manly this could be quite of putting. With the female in the middle of the two men this shows male dominance which is much portrayed in rock and indie magazines.

The main title "Art of Darkness" goes well with the background as the background is partially white and grey. The font is bold with a fairly simple font which attracts the audiences attention greatly. Also because the main title is so simple it would get the audience to want to read on more and find out what the magazine has to offer. This is a good technique to use.

The type of language used in this article is formal which gives the idea that it is aimed at a more older, sophisticated audience usually this applies to the rock and indie type of market as appose to a rap or pop type of market audience. The article is also written in a constant format with quotes. The text itself looks fairly sophisticated as it is in its own little section of the page rather than all over it. The colour of the font is white making it stand out and therefore easier to read.  The letter ‘X’ is repeated in the background and to separate paragraphs, this is been done so audiences remember the bands name for future references.

Feedback

Chike you are making some progress now with the research and planning work but again there are a few items that you need to add (see checklist). In addition you must now start to add a running commentary in which you add screen shots of your work in progress with a short commentary. You must also speed up with constructing the front page.

Planning Of Main Article

This is how my double page spread will look

The  most  sucessful young artist of 2011 S Tizzle has come from the hood and has now made it to fame an success. The one and only S Tizzle some would compare to Soulja Boy with success. He is only 17 years of age and is taking the Rap industry by storm. Having sold his first hit song at the age of 13 he is the youngest rapper so far to sell 32,000000 albums. He is here to speak to us about his new new album "Money Is Da Motive" and his life.

How Did you feel when you first got signed to BMT Records?

Well I wos kind of shocked because I wos just like any other person uploading my music on youtube and the next minute I wos discovered by a talent scout asking if I wanted to be joined up with them. The first thing I did was tell my mum that there was a record company that offered me a record deal because they thought that I had talent.

How did you decide on your album name "Money is da motive" ?

Well coming from the hood I had no money for most of my life anyway and I was always keen on making money so I had to find a way of making money. Money can buy you anything. Happiness, Success, Respect. I have now made a promise to myself that I will never become broke ever again. So ever since then I hav thout to myself that money is the motive.

Would there be any music collaborations in your new album "Money Is Da Motive"

Yes in this album I am going to have a few new hot tracks on here in which I am going to be commaborating with artists such as Yung Nate, Grand Money, and Yung Steezy. So look out for this, that ones goin to be a must buy!

Analysis Of NME Contents Page

The use of the ‘NME’ logo in big bold red text gives it a center piece in the page. The gives the reader constant reminders of the company leading the magazine and the resource to research the company on the internet.

The font, colours and house style are all the same type which gives the magazine a bold, but effective way of presenting their pieces. The layout is also very similar which gives the magazine structure and the reader’s a clear understanding of where to find what article or piece.
The use of sub-headings puts each piece of content into easier and clearer categories, making the magazine make sense and clearer. The images used on the contents page feature two big stars making the magazine an even greater prospect as the audience will feel more engaged and want to read the magazine more with music bands like Oasis on the contents.

The audience targeted for this magazine is very clear and obviously doesn’t relate to social groups who like gardening or ‘UK garage’ for example. It has specifically targeted people who enjoy rock and indie music through the use of an Oasis member and features on bands, such as, Arctic Monkeys.

The basic magazine structure consists of a ‘taster article’ on the contents page giving prospective buyers an insight into the content on the magazine. The pronounced use of ‘subscribe today’ is a sly way of persuading and easily showing people how you can get the magazine on a regular occasion. The sub-headings are clear and precise and show you very easily where you can access that content in the magazine. The band index gives the reader and precise showing of what bands will be in the magazine. This may give the readers more purpose to buy the magazine as maybe there could be a feature on their favourite band.

Analysis of double page spread.

In this double page spread the main image is of a well known artist called Lilly Allen so this would draw attention to the magazine. Also the image is big and dominates the page. Some would say that Lily Allen is attractive and so people may want to read more about her and what her music is like and what status she is at inthe music industry. The type of clothes that Lilly Allen is wearing are casual clothes which the audience can relate to because they would tend to dress in a similar way maybe. The large image on the double page spread of Lilly Allen makes us think that she is in dominance with the music industry because her picture dominates the page. Lily Allen also puts her hands on her hips to make it clearer and bolder that she is being dominanat in the music industry. This kind of pose is more like a male pose. Its quite unordinary as women seem to be portrayed more as less dominant. Also the type of clothes that Lilly Allen is wearing is male clothes which also adds to the unstereotypical image of a female.

The subheading has Lilly Allen in a different colour to the rest of the heading to highlight the article is all about Lilly Allen.

The floating quote goes with the context of the article of the magaazine because her personality is basically described by her saying "People think I am an attention seeker but I'm just honest."  This goes with the context of the article and Allen’s personality as she is brutally honest, and  rude. This might also attract reader’s as they might think she could be threatening someone in the article. The quote also suggests that she’s going to be honest about what she thinks, therefore she might come up with some gossip – which is one of the main reason audiences buy magazines.

Front Cover Analysis Of Vibe

'Vibe' magazine follows typical magazine conventions, however differs from those such as 'MOJO', 'NME' or 'Q'. 'Vibe' is more of an unknown magazine and therefore the masthead is placed in front of the model, as appose to behind, to ensure the name is in full view of the audience. The masthead is also placed central to the splash and is bold and bright, contrasting against the black and white theme of the main image, ensuring that it stands out from all other conventions.

The institution of 'VIBE' is Vibe. 'VIBE' magazine is a commercial magazine with it's own website, it's main purpose being to make money. The main contents of 'VIBE' are music related and there to entertain, however, as it is a commercial magazine adverts have to be included to ensure money is being made.

The main image of T.I is large, covering a large percentage of the splash, and is shot straight on in a close up, guaranteeing all facial expressions are clearly seen. The strong eye-contact and narrow eyes make T.I look in power and, in turn make the audience feel intimidated. This connects well with the feel of the magazine and also T.I's image; a dominant male character throughout music. This pose also makes T.I look as though he is in control of himself, knows what he wants and as though he is confident with himself and also his position in music. The black and white element of the picture adds to the classiness of not only the magazine but also the model, along with the clothing he is wearing. The shirt and tie combination gives T.I a classy edge, which contrasts with the bad boy image that is partly associated with him. However, by adding casual glasses this shows that he is not all work and that he is also layed back, connoting that T.I can be relatable despite his position in the music industry.

Similarly, the black and white theme of the magazine connotes class and gives the magazine a more high profile look. Putting the red against the running monochrome theme helps important elements stand out to the audience, making conventions such as the masthead and cover lines become more noticeable. Also featured in a red font is a quote from T.I in the main cover line. The quote, as appose to T.I's name, has been written in red to ensure that it stands out to the audience and gives them awareness as to what is included in the interview. T.I's name is not in red and the audience already know who the article will be about, due to the main image and therefore is less important, whereas the quote has the ability to draw the reader in more as it shows T.I speaking voice, making the interview more personal.

The cover lines, placed down both the left and right side of the splash draw the reader in while also giving them an idea as to what, and who will be included in the magazine. The main cover line is the largest and therefore directs the readers eye straight to it. The cover line relates to the main image and also includes the caption "The untold story behind the deal", which urges the reader to take an interest in the magazine as the article is 'untold' and therefore gives the idea that it is exclusive. The opposite cover line titled "50 cent, prince, lauryn hill, dr. dre, jay-z and biggie. 51 LOST ALBUMS" is a further contributing factor towards the reader wanting to buy the magazine. As 'VIBE' is aiming towards people who are interested in the hip-hop and grime music genre, this gets their attention well by listing artists key to the specific genre. As the cover line also mentions 'lost albums' this makes the reader want to know more, as yet again the content is exclusive because the albums have been 'lost' and therefore no one has even seen or heard them before. This connotes that by buying the magazine you will be the first to know about the albums and therefore know more about that specific music genre.

The bar code is placed in the bottom right hand corner of the splash, ensuring that it is away from the main cover line/cover lines, thus keeping the attention towards the main features. Placed under the bar code is the website of the magazine, www.vibe.com, which lets the readers know where they can find out more about the magazine and therefore broadening the amount of information they can receive about the magazine as a whole.

Front Cover Analysis Of XXl Magazine

Masthead ‘XXL’ – embedded with diamonds this reflects bling culture which is associated with Hip hop and rap. Diamonds also connote wealth suggesting the magazine reports about the best of RnB music. The fact that it’s called ‘XXL’ also suggests that they’ve are a high quality magazine who only feature the best. The masthead has a red background in order to make it stand out and catch the audience’s attention.

The puff which says "lloyd banks, Wiz Khalifa, Shyne, R Kelly, B.O.B" makes us want to know more about what is going on in the magazine and more about these artists that are going to be featured inside it.

The main image is of Soulja Boy and 50 Cent. This image is very similar to the one of lil wayne and birdman, where they are both wearing numerous amount of expensive looking jewellery on, this signifies excessive wealth which Hip hop /Rap audience’s can immediately recognise and would want imitate. This technique  is referred to as a preferred reading as it persuades the audience to buy the magazine in order for them to emulate the two rap stars. Soulja boy is standind next to 50 cent in almost like a fatherly son pose with 50 cent looking like a father figure and soulja boy looking like a son figure. Soulja Boy is wearing crazy amounts of jewellery on him to show the wealth that he has. This reflects soulja boys character of being arrogant and young not giving a care in the world about his haters. He is also showing off the numerous amount of tattoos that he has while showing off his Gucci belt. This portrays a very stereotypical image of modern day rappers not having a care in the world because they are rich and have lots of tattoos. Whereas 50 cent is wearing a vest and a cloth to cover up his face this almost looks like he is robbing Soulja Boy but he poses like a father figure with his arm around Soulja boy showing that soulja boy is protected. 50 Cent shows off his muscles to show that he is strong with some bling on his hand it also shows that he is wealthy and still manages to fit the stereotypical image of a rapper. The editors have covered all points and taken everything into considerations in order for them to attract a mainstream audience.

The main cover line "50 Cent and Soulja Boy, A Haters Worst Nightmare" shows that these two artists are extremely contraversial and that they are both hated and liked by huge numbers. With them together this would attract huge media attention and so whent they say "A heters worst nightmare" they mean that they are going to get good criticism and good thing said about them outweighing the hate that they are going to get from their haters.

In the puff well known rap artists are named such as ‘Wiz Khlifa’ and ‘Lloys Banks’ this interests Rap audiences as the artists are well known.

My Newspaper Anlysis

  • The word swaggerish written in a graphiti font which relates to the word it also reinforces R&B convention.
In Vibe magazine we see on the front cover a blue masterhead which is related to coolness as blue is quite a cool colour. Also seeng as it is an RnB magazine blue represents smoothness. The blue masterhead represents unsex nature of the magazine. Vibe is written in both uppercase and lowercase characters which allows the reader to distinguish the magazine more easier.

The main point of the front cover is that Usher is engaged so he shows off his engagement ring on his finger. This adds a provocative effect to the front cover. He is holding up his finger which s next to his middle finger which makes us thing that he is actually swearing but he isn't. This is related to the genre of the magazine in which it is RnB as a bit classy as he is not swearing. Thi adds to the contreversary which surrounds Ushers marriage.

The word sex is repeatedly used in the front page "The sex issue" "sex scandals"  as RnB is mostly inked in some way or another to it.The cool pose in which Usher is using suggests that he is quite cool.
The main large image that you see in the magazine is of Usher which would tend to attract more of a female audience rather than a male audience because he is an R&B singer which this mostly attracts a female audience. The shot is a low angled shot in which we see Usher as being powerful or dominating in the R&B world hence the words "The King Is Back". This adds to the effect of him showing off his provocative finger with a ring on it emphasising power and dominance.

The selective focus used on Usher  is used to focus on the main image to show the importance of it while the background image is in blurred focus to show the unimportance of the background. Also as Usher is wearing sunglasses it hides part of his identity so we would want to see more of the main image which is Usher and be curious about what is going on.

In the main cover line we see the words 'Usher he's number 1' have been made larger compared to the other few words describing the main article. There is more emphasis on the larger words in order to attract Usher’s fans.
Also to add to this. The website is on the bottom of the magazine to get the readers to visit their website and get their customers more into their other magazines. The information is used to help get the customers more interested in the website and magazines.
